The Golden Gate Atelier humanities program is a survey of Western culture as it applies to visual artists. We’ll begin in the first trimester with the classical Greek world and its influence. In the second trimester we’ll study the core of the canon: the Bible, Dante, Shakespeare, Leonardo, Bach, and Beethoven. Finally, we’ll try to understand the modern world and the ideas that have shaped us: the Enlightenment, Romanticism, Modernism, and contemporary society with its globalization and multiple belief systems. We’ll explore all these works in seminars using the Socratic method of shared-inquiry discussion. Throughout, we’ll connect our reading to our daily struggles as painters. What themes resonate in the world today?
